OpenAI’s Sora App Now Has an Average of 200K Downloads Per Day

OpenAI appears to have achieved success with Sora, its new app for AI-generated videos, judging by the app’s accelerating download trend.

In essence, Bill Peebles, head of Sora at OpenAI, noted today that the app has reached 1 million downloads in less than 5 days, equivalent to an average download speed of around 200,000 per day.

This download momentum becomes even more remarkable when we consider the fact that Sora is currently not freely downloadable, with access limited to invitation only. Moreover, the app is currently only available in North America.

What is Sora App?

1. OpenAI’s Sora 2 is a text-to-video model.
2. Sora app is a social media platform where users can create and share videos using the Sora model.
3. This application allows users to upload still images and then animate them in the form of videos.
4. The Cameo feature of the app allows users to insert their hyper-realistic avatars into different videos.
5. The app automatically adds music, sound effects, and even entire dialogue, based on the nature of the command.
6. A TikTok-style “For You” page displays an AI-generated video feed, based on a particular user’s interests.

Of course, the Sora app is not without controversy, especially around alleged copyright infringement. For example, recently some users were able to create and upload independent characters in iconic shows like SpongeBob SquarePants, Rick and Morty, and South Park, changing the original storyline in the process.

The Motion Picture Association recently said in a statement that videos that “infringe our members’ films, shows and characters have proliferated on OpenAI’s services,” calling on the company to “take immediate and decisive action to address this issue.”

To address this issue, OpenAI plans to give copyright holders more granular control over character creation and how their content is used in applications.
