AMD Medusa Halo “Ryzen AI MAX” SoC Will Feature LPDDR6 Memory Support

The next generation AMD Ryzen AI MAX SoC, codenamed Medusa Halo, will feature support for LPDDR6 memory.

AMD Medusa Halo SoC “Ryzen AI MAX” To Increase Bandwidth Performance With LPDDR6 Memory

AMD’s Ryzen AI MAX series featured two new additions at this year’s CES, and the company is working on a refresh for its first-generation Halo lineup. The first-generation Strix Halo series has maintained its super-premium position as a SoC for AI PCs, and with Gorgon Halo (Ryzen AI MAX 400), AMD will continue to push performance even further with increased CPU/GPU clocks and higher memory speeds.

The Strix Halo successor will actually come in the form of the Medusa Halo or Ryzen AI MAX 500 series. This is due sometime in 2027-2028, and will feature the new Zen 6 CPU cores and RDNA 5 GPU cores. As per rumors, AMD will have a variety of Medusa SoCs, with entry-level SoCs getting RDNA 3.5 iGPU cores while more premium SoCs and Halo SoCs will get newer RDNA 5 iGPU configurations.

While it’s too early to say what kind of specs we’ll get with Medusa Halo, up to 24 cores, and a similar or larger GPU core configuration, it’s likely the platform itself will utilize the next-gen LPDDR6 memory standard.

We know from JEDEC’s own confirmation that LPDDR6 memory will feature speeds of 14,400 MT/s over 24-bit wide channels, and with a bandwidth of 38.4 GB/s per module. Strix Halo initially featured support for up to 8000 MT/s, with bandwidth up to 256 GB/s. This will be updated to 8533 MT/s in the upcoming lineup refresh.

But with Medusa Halo, even with the same bus width of 256-bit, we get a bandwidth of 460 GB/s, an 80% increase. This proved to be a major improvement to the onboard GPU, resulting in much better performance. Currently, the Intel Panther Lake 12Xe3 SoC features the fastest LPDDR configuration up to 9600 MT/s on notebook PCs. Even though Intel is building its own SoC roadmap with a strong offering and working with NVIDIA, AMD remains unfazed by the partnership and has stated that it will continue to offer disruptive technology in the future.

This will make the AMD Ryzen AI MAX 500 “Medusa Halo” a powerful SoC, built on the foundation of Strix and Gorgon Halo, which is a disruptive offering for the AI PC and gaming segments. AMD’s recently introduced Ryzen AI Halo platform will also receive updates with each generation of Halo SoC.
