Octopath Traveler 0: Important Tips for Beginners

Choose Warrior as Your First Job

While each Job has its uses, Warrior stands out as the best starting Job, especially if Octopath Traveler 0 is your first entry in the series. In addition to offering solid strength and defense as well as a large selection of attack-oriented skills, Warriors can wield Swords and Spears, two weapon options that won’t be available to your party for some time due to early recruitable characters.

Additionally, many of the enemies you’ll encounter in the first chapters of the Master of Power, Master of Wealth, and Master of Fame quests are weak to Swords, so having Warriors capable of exploiting these weaknesses will prove invaluable as you get to know the game’s mechanics.

Choose a Bachelor’s Degree as Your Second Job

Compared to Warrior, the Scholar Job is not a good starting Job, but a good secondary Job. While the Boost system cannot be used to increase the number of times elemental spells can hit an enemy, this property is just as important for Destroying enemies.

Since Octopath Traveler 0 allows you to switch the main character’s Job directly from the main menu (Skills – Protagonist Job), you can easily adapt to the enemies you face in a particular area by switching between Warrior and Scholar as needed, letting other starting characters cover other weapon-based weaknesses and Ice and Dark elements that the Scholar cannot attack.

Opening a second job is also very easy. All you need to do is learn three skills with the last job you unlocked. So, to make Scholar your second job, all you have to do is learn three skills for Warrior for a total of 430 JP (30 JP for the first skill, 100 for the second skill, 300 for the third), regardless of which skills are unlocked.

As an added bonus, Scholar’s first Support Skill, Study Foe, also reveals one undiscovered weakness in any enemy early in the battle, making this a great Job to run with certain party configurations.

The Quests section of the main menu is very useful for several reasons. Its main purpose is to list all available missions, but it has some additional functions that make it more useful.

• By pressing the Cross (PlayStation), A (Xbox) / B (Nintendo Switch) buttons while a mission is highlighted, you can not only track any mission but also fast travel to its location, reducing the time it takes to start it.
• In addition to listing all missions known to be available, the Missions menu also lists available missions that you have not yet discovered. The icon also indicates whether it is a regular side mission or a Traveler-focused mission that allows you to recruit new party members.

Therefore, always check the Quests menu whenever you complete a main story mission. This allows you to engage with side content and helps you reach completion quickly.

Always use Path Actions Whenever Possible

Path Actions return in Octopath Traveler 0, and are more useful than ever. By pressing the Square (PlayStation)/X (Xbox)/Y (Nintendo Switch) buttons near any applicable NPC, you can ask to learn more about them, Persuade them to buy or obtain items after the fight, Hire them as Combat Helpers, or Invite them to live in Wishvale.

Since these NPCs sometimes offer some useful items like Masteries that can be used to equip the character’s skills and powerful equipment, you’ll want to use Path Action interactions on every possible character. Depending on your current level of Power, Wealth, and Fame, your interactions may fail and may force you to restore your reputation at a nearby Tavern, but if you handle this correctly and don’t try interactions that have a high chance of failure, you can take advantage of this mechanic at any time during the adventure

Be Efficient in Battle To Get Awesome Rewards

Octopath Traveler 0 rewards your combat performance by giving bonus EXP, JP, and Leaves (money) depending on how well you do.

Therefore, you should always try to finish the battle after destroying the enemy in one turn. This is difficult to achieve against elite enemies and bosses, but if you do it every random encounter against mobs, the rewards will stack, making your character stronger, and allowing you to engage more with the game’s Job and Mastery systems.

Don’t Sleep While Eating

While items are equally important for recovering HP and SP as well as quickly curing status ailments, you should not overlook how important Food is. Items that can be cooked from the Tavern in Wishvale provide various bonuses for a certain number of rounds, from stat increases to automatic HP and SP recovery. Since the available Food options increase as you play the game, be sure to check out at the Tavern what can be cooked to gain a huge advantage against all kinds of enemies.
