AMD is one of the first customers of 2NM TSMC, and the company said the Taiwan giant was the winner in the 2NM race, claiming that there was no other casting that matched the process.
AMD is the first customer of the TSMC 2NM process and will use it for the next generation Venice Epyc CPU
The semiconductor industry is currently struggling for the 2NM process, and this time, the competition is much tighter, given that companies such as Intel and Samsung have shown significant progress with their respective latest processes. Companies such as Nvidia and Apple are in the market looking for the second “casting partner”, but it seems that no one can replace the TSMC, at least for now. According to interviews with Senior Vice President AMD (via Chosun Biz), it was revealed that AMD considered the TSMC 2NM node as a superior option out there.
We are developing a processor (Epyc Venice) and will officially launch it on the market next year. TSMC is a leader in the 2NM process, so we focus on the development and production of mass with the highest efficiency per watt and semiconductor performance.
For those who are not aware, AMD revealed a few weeks ago that it was the first TSMC customer to use the 2NM process, and the company’s CEO, Lisa SU, himself, went to Arizona’s facility to express the announcement. Team Red has become the first company to publicly adopt the N2 process, which shows that the node has significance, and will act with the EPYC Venice Server AMD CPU, which is scheduled to be launched next year.
Speaking of the data center segment, SVP AMD revealed that the company had made a significant step, seeing the business grew by 57% in the first quarter of 2025, and growth was expected to remain consistent. AMD also plans to expand its offer to the final market segment with their latest Epyc 4005 “Grado” CPU, which is expected to increase company adoption for CPU servers that move into the future.
When discussing the possibility of employing 2nm from casting other than TSMC, SVP AMD does not rule out the option, revealed that they are always in talks with companies that can collaborate and provide “the best service to customers”. So it is safe to say that AMD is not in an exclusive partnership with TSMC; Conversely, the company has an open option, and the possibility of candidates after the Taiwan giant is likely to be the Samsung Foundry.
