Apple’s Original MacBook Pro Enters Its Third Decade Today

Few gadgets have proven as iconic as Apple’s original MacBook Pro, which redefined what personal computing was. And today, that amazing machine turns 20 years old.

Apple’s Steve Jobs unveiled the original MacBook Pro at the Macworld San Francisco event on January 10, 2006

Apple launched the MacBook Pro in 2006 as a successor to the professional PowerBook, featuring a switch from PowerPC chips to chips from Intel.

The original 2006 Apple MacBook came in two configurations:

1. The entry-level model is priced at $1,999, and comes with a 15.4-inch display, a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 512MB DDR2 667MHz RAM, and an 80GB hard drive.
2. The high-end model is priced at $2,499, and comes with a 15.4-inch display, optional 2.0GHz and 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo processors, 1GB RAM, and a 100GB hard drive.

Since then, of course, the Apple MacBook Pro has adopted a number of now-iconic design choices, including a built-in webcam, MagSafe power connector, aluminum unibody construction, high-resolution Retina display, etc.

Of course, some of the MacBook Pro’s design choices have come under fire over the years, including the Touch Bar and butterfly mechanism keyboard.

Meanwhile, there’s a lot more in store for the MacBook Pro iterations expected to launch in 2026 and 2027, including OLED displays, touchscreen support, and perhaps a special Dynamic Island cutout.
