The industry has seen massive collaboration in the field of AI in recent weeks, largely driven by non-profit organizations, and yes, you guessed right, that’s OpenAI. The deal being formulated involved the deployment of ‘multi-GW’ data centers across various technology sectors, and the announcement was so significant that it resulted in financial markets reacting ‘a little too’ positively to it. While Anthropic’s CEO is confident about the data center buildout, he has expressed concerns over some of the deals, calling them ‘fishy’.

Well, Amodei didn’t name any names, even after being asked by host Marc Benioff, so he probably dodged a bullet there. However, Amodei also mentions the phenomenon of ‘double counting’ here, which we rarely hear about. He was essentially referring to how the press manages to frame investment deals, where the same data center investment is reported by multiple companies, signaling the actual amount, even though the parties involved are the same.

Interestingly, the Anthropic CEO also claimed that some of the deals out there were ‘tripling’ his investment, and again, he didn’t mention any specific events. Of course, we also can’t determine any particular deal falls under the realm Amodei mentioned. If you think these comments are targeted at OpenAI, that’s probably not an unreasonable guess, given the underlying rivalry between Anthropic and OpenAI, and that Amodei is a former executive at Altman’s AI company.

The AI ​​data center segment is growing rapidly, with billion-dollar deals being announced almost every week, so the interest in this is definitely there.
