AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 Launches For ASUS ROG Ally Handheld Devices, Delivering Significant Performance Improvements

ASUS officials showcased the performance improvements their ROG Ally and Ally X handhelds received with the release of AFMF 2. More benchmarks prove the same.

AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 launches for ROG Ally handheld devices, reducing frame times and improving performance

AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 is an upgraded version of the original AFMF that was released in early 2024. Although AFMF 2 was officially released in October with AMD Adrenalin 24.9.1 GPU drivers, it did not hit some devices in the initial launch. . Thankfully AFMF 2 has now been released for ASUS gaming handhelds, namely the ROG Ally and ROG Ally

AMD promises 2.5X the performance with AFMF 2 and brings several improvements we’ve previously reported. It’s great to see that the performance improvements can now also be seen on the ROG Ally and Ally

One of the earliest benchmarks we have is from ASUS itself, showing off in a recent YouTube live broadcast. In addition to explaining how to install and use it on the ROG Ally handheld, the officials also pointed out how much of a performance boost the console received. Since some games (mostly older titles) didn’t ship with any upscaling methods, like FSR 3, AFMF 2 comes to the rescue as it doesn’t require games to have built-in frame rendering techniques.

Even though AFMF performance is not as optimal as FSR 3, AFMF still allows you to play games smoothly. As seen from the benchmark, AFMF 2 is able to reduce latency and increase fps significantly. Similarly, we have another channel called Quick Expert Review which shows the same thing.

Short Expert Review:

  1. Hell Diver 2: 35-40 fps, frame time: 20-25 ms, with AFMF 2: 60-70fpsframe time: 12-15 ms
  2. Fall of 76: 25-40 fps, frame time: 21-45 ms, with AFMF 2: 60-100fpsframe time: 10-15 msec
  3. Cyberpunk 2077: 20-30 fps, frame time: 22-40 ms, with AFMF 2: 50+fpsframe time: 15-25 msec

AFMF 2 can be installed via GPU driver update from the Update Center on both consoles. However, we must ensure that the AMD driver is running in the background. ASUS recommends that you turn off V-Sync and apply fullscreen or borderless fullscreen mode to take advantage of the power of AFMF 2. One more thing to note is that AFMF 2 works well with games that are already hitting 45+ fps, and ASUS recommends applying graphics settings that allows you to achieve this FPS mark natively.
