Entire Three Sector Entertainment Staff Risks Layoff After Launch of Wreckreation

Wreckreation, an open-world sandbox driving game that lets you edit the world on the go, developed by Three Fields Entertainment, a studio comprised of former Criterion developers who worked on the Burnout series, was released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S last October. Now, CEO Fiona Sperry has announced that all staff at Three Fields Entertainment have been notified that they could potentially lose their jobs.

Wreckreation’s launch had been marred by technical problems, although Sperry did not directly cite the game’s lackluster launch as a reason for putting the entire staff at risk of dismissal.

Today I have to share one of the most difficult messages of my career. After twelve years of building and maintaining Three Fields Entertainment, I am forced to face the current situation that places our entire team on redundancy notice.,’ Sperry began his LinkedIn post.

Since the launch of Wreckreation, our small studio has worked incredibly hard — with heart and dedication — to update the game, listen to our community, and deliver the fixes and features players have been asking for. I’m very proud of the people I’ve worked with or the passion they put into this project. But the reality we face today is very real. As an independent studio, we will not see revenue from future game sales. We had to self-fund most of the year and all post-launch content. Without enthusiasm or financial support from our publisher to continue development, we could not maintain the studio in its current form. Making this decision was incredibly painful.

Sperry’s post also included a video showcasing the post-launch content the studio added to Wreckreation in hopes of increasing the game’s viewership while the team also worked to fix technical issues players faced at launch.

“My hope is that by showing this work to the public, people out there can also see the potential and maybe opportunities can still arise,” Sperry continued. “But even if those hopes don’t come true, we want this to be a testament to our vision and the strength, passion and skill of our small team. I truly believe in the potential of this game and the brilliance of the people who built it.”

“To everyone who has supported us, played our games, or trusted our studio: thank you. Your support means a lot – We will, once again, at our own expense, ensure the next update that includes Crossplay features is published before Christmas and we hope you and your friends can enjoy the world we’ve built together, whatever platform you play on.”

Unfortunately, this is Three Fields Entertainment’s second major release to miss the mark. 2019’s Dangerous Driving earned a 5/10 from Wccftech and a 62 on Metacritic. At the time, Wccftech’s Nathan Birch wrote, “Dangerous Driving is, at best, a rough early prototype of a proper Burnout successor. The basic mechanics and speed are there, but they’re seriously undermined by bland track design, annoying AI, lack of features, and a host of other issues. Those nostalgic for Burnout would do well to try the classic again, rather than try this lemon.
