Ubisoft may have closed the crew server, but the unlimited community efforts have revived the game

Ubisoft closed the server for the Open World MMO racing game, The Crew, on March 31, 2024. That is a very unfortunate news, but not too surprising in modern times from online games that have the expiration date ‘every time the developer decides it cannot/will not pay for the server again.’ But while the occurrence of online games that are closed now become ordinary, the closing of the crew triggers something more.

It does not only trigger a lawsuit that makes players more aware than before that they always buy licenses to play games, not copies of the game. This triggers enough reaction so that Ubisoft is committed to adding offline mode for crew 2 and the Motorfest crew. It was enough to cause a commotion that Valve added a warning to the purchase of steam, making it clear to the players that they bought a license to play the game, not a copy of the game. And, perhaps the most important thing, it is a match that lights the fire under the Stop Killing Games Initiative.

While the game stopped killing and stopped destroying videogame and petition initiatives continued, and the lawsuit of two California which began by crew fans is still ongoing, a group called Crew Unlimited (TCU) has worked hard to bring the crew again in ancient way, by creating an emulator to run the server.

Today, TCU is aware of its purpose, and players with a copy of the game can jump back to the crew thanks to their hard work.

If you have a copy of the crew on a PC, then you must be able to set TCU for yourself to continue to play a shutdown game that seems to have more impacts on the videogame industry than when it is still distributed by Ubisoft.
