New Mass Effect Game Featuring the Krogan Civil War

Yesterday was N7 Day, an annual franchise appreciation day held by Mass Effect developer BioWare every November 7 since 2012. In the game, N7 is a vocational code in the Systems Alliance military, where N refers to special forces and the number 7 refers to the highest level of proficiency, thus referring to the main character, Shepard, and his assault team.

N7 Day 2025 conveys confirmation that the studio, despite the layoffs, is still working on the next Mass Effect game. In the blog post, longtime Executive Producer Mike Gamble inserted a cryptic message that was eventually decoded by fans, revealing new artwork from the upcoming game. The art depicts Krogan characters and features the subtitle ‘Civil War’. This hints at one of the themes we may find in the game: a major split within the Krogan race between at least two factions.

Those who have played the Mass Effect games before will be familiar with the Krogan, a species of large bipedal reptiles originating from the planet Tuchanka. They famously survived despite their home world’s harsh environment, only to destroy it themselves in a nuclear war. The survivors are divided into tribes that are constantly at war with each other. It’s true, they’re considered a warrior race, but some of them don’t necessarily want to perpetuate the endless cycle of battle that characterizes the Krogan. This may be a major source of disagreement, although of course this is just speculation at this time.

The next Mass Effect is at least three to four years away, and fans may have to settle for just teaser art in the near future. However, there is an Amazon TV series in development, and BioWare confirmed that it will be an original story (written by Daniel Casey and directed by Doug Jung) set in the original Mass Effect trilogy.
