Expedition 33 sells 2x as fast as other jrpg in Steam, proves Square Enix wrong

It is not the mystery that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been a huge success, given that the developer of Sandfall Interactive and Kepler Interactive publishers have announced one million sellers (although available in the game pass, too). How to compared with other JRPG?

According to our analyst friend, Rhys Elliott, who was previously often displayed in an exclusive interview at WCCFTech, he sells faster, at least in Steam. Elliott, who recently left Midia Research to become the Head of Market Analysis in the Analytics paragraph, spoke with Gamesindustry.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a certified hit, officially selling more than one million copies. The announcement did not say the player reached the copy of the copy. That is an option, and I praise transparency. It should be noted that two of them are ports, but the data is still talking a lot about how many gamers are drawn to Expedition 33. Low price points may also be taken into account, because our steam data shows that many players bite bullets when AAA games begin to be sold and dropped below $ 50.

The same thing does not apply to Playstation sales, where the rebirth of Final Fantasy VII is sold four times faster at launch. However, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is still in front of the remaining package. In addition, losing to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in Playstation was not surprising, considering the big hype around the game before its launch last year.

In the interview mentioned above, Elliott also showed the fact that some JRPG fans were waiting for such realistic JRPG, even with a turn -based battle, different from the Square Enix public statement about this problem:

There is also an opening for modern JRPG that looks realistic. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has given RPG fans something they always want. If you ask Final Fantasy fans from the end of the 90s/early ’00s what kind of ideal version of JRPG, it will be something like this.

The reference is quite clear. Back in June 2022, Final Fantasy XVI Naoki Yoshida’s producer openly said that it was increasingly difficult to mix the battle based on turn and realistic graphics because they created special feelings among several players. Indeed, the game focused tightly on action -based battles, avoiding a traditional series -based system.

While I personally do not fully disagree with Yoshida’s assessment, there must still be space for turn-based battles, especially if it is changed with main innovations such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which displays the avoidance of real-time and parries.

In addition, this special game is too good in almost everything it does, as described in a 9.5/10 WCCFTech review:

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 may not be the most innovative role game, but the essence of the essence is beautifully united, providing a touching emotional journey as well as interesting and fun. This may be Sandfall Interactive’s first expedition, but the French developer has shown that he has the desire and flesh to make an unforgettable experience that is worthy of this year’s nomination of games, if not the award itself.
