Apple May Skip The 9-Core M4 CPU Version For Its Base MacBook Pro And Offer An Upgraded 10-Core Version As Standard, With Double The RAM

The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro M4 models are expected to be announced later this year, along with a redesigned Mac mini and an iMac powered by the same chipset. Now, Apple typically equips its basic portable Macs with chipsets with lower CPU and GPU counts, and this makes sense. However, this year will be a little different because while there are two M4 variants available for the iPad Pro lineup, Apple will go with the higher-end version that uses a 10-core CPU.

The 10-core CPU version of the M4 MacBook Pro previously managed to show that it also comes with 16 GB of integrated RAM.

The M4 equipped with a 10-core CPU will also feature a 10-core GPU, and thanks to an improved second-generation 3nm process, Apple has equipped its chipset with more performance cores than efficiency cores, which explains why it’s the 14-inch MacBook Pro that’s being taken for a spin. Geekbench 6 by the Russian YouTuber achieved excellent single-core and multi-core scores. Regarding other configurations, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has highlighted in his latest ‘Power On’ newsletter that the minimum amount of integrated RAM this Mac will use is 16 GB.

“At least for the base-level MacBook Pro, it appears Apple may skip that nine-core CPU configuration and just produce a version with a 10-core unit. For the first time, Apple will also likely start shipping at least some low-end Macs with at least 16 gigabytes of memory. Apple Intelligence, coming Monday, only takes up 8 gigabytes, but can use up to several gigabytes at a time, so it won’t be used much for other tasks.”

Previously, we reported that Apple accidentally leaked some configurations of the M4 MacBook Pro and discovered that the base version features 16 GB of integrated RAM, along with 512 GB of storage, while the high-end model uses 28 GB of integrated RAM. We have a feeling Apple is finally taking the specs of its expensive machines more seriously, because 8GB of memory in 2024 is ridiculous, especially after seeing how much RAM some programs can chew up. The 16GB configuration will also be beneficial for developers to make effective use of loading high-resolution textures in AAA games, as the M4 is capable enough to run demanding titles.

Another improvement for productivity lovers showcased by another Russian YouTuber is that the M4 MacBook Pro can be used with two external monitors when the lid is opened, something that is sorely missing from the M3 version. It’s possible that the new SoC features twice as many Thunderbolt controllers as the M3, making this possible. Regarding other changes and features, we will prepare more updates for you in the coming hours, so stay tuned.
