OpenAI Says Its First Consumer AI Device – Rumored To Be “Sweetpea” Earbuds.

OpenAI’s first consumer device, said to be AI-powered earbuds internally codenamed “Sweetpea,” has now officially moved from rumor to teaser stage, and the startup’s chief global affairs officer, Chris Lehane, chose to reveal some interesting information at the ongoing World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Chris Lehane: Upcoming consumer AI devices are one of OpenAI’s highest priorities in 2026

While speaking at the WEF Axios House Davos event, OpenAI’s Lehane has chosen to reveal that the startup’s first consumer AI device is one of its highest priorities this year, and it is working to launch such a device in the second half of 2026.

Taiwan Economic Daily added further color by noting that OpenAI will likely launch the device in September 2026, and is targeting a sales volume of between 40 million to 50 million units in the first year. The publication also added that the device will likely be manufactured by Foxconn in Vietnam.

Although Lehane avoided further details, we already know from a number of recent reports that OpenAI appears to be working on custom AI-powered earbuds that have the internal codename “Sweetpea.” The device will rely heavily on cloud-based AI processing, while featuring a 2nm Samsung Exynos chip for some on-device processing.

Of course, OpenAI is also working on another consumer device that is reportedly shaped like a pen and similar in size to Apple’s iPod Shuffle. The device has the internal codename “Gumdrop”, and completely lacks a dedicated screen. Additional details include:

1. Contextual awareness through a series of sensors, including cameras and microphones.
2. The device will be able to run customized OpenAI AI models locally, with cloud computing support available for more compute-intensive tasks.
3. It will be able to convert handwritten notes to text and directly upload them to ChatGPT.
4. These devices will be able to communicate with their peers, much like we currently do with smartphones.
5. It doesn’t look like a wearable device, but can be carried in a pocket or worn around the neck.
6. It is expected to launch in 2026 or 2027.
