The new HDR standard will not only deliver higher peak brightness, but will also feature genre-based optimization and motion smoothing.
Basic HDR10 is being upgraded to a superior format, which will even surpass HDR10+ in terms of features. HDR10, which is common on many displays today, doesn’t make a significant difference in visuals and maxes out at 1,000 nits when mastering content. HDR10+ also works well and has mastered 1,000-4,000 nits, but the latest HDR10+ Advanced It reportedly reaches up to 5,000 nits of brightness, ensuring the format can truly deliver incredible visuals.
Samsung recently revealed its newest HDR10 format, called “HDR10+ Advanced”, which aims to compete with Dolby Vision 2, a standard announced in September this year. Similar to Dolby Vision 2, HDR10+ Advanced brings features like tone mapping and motion smoothing controls. However, Dolby Vision 2 remains a proprietary format while HDR10+ Advanced is positioned as a Royalty-free evolution of HDR10+, making it more attractive.
HDR10+ Advanced also features features aimed at game streaming, offering smoother motion. Unlike HDR10 and HDR10+, this new format also handles genre-based optimization, which adapts image processing to genres such as movies, sports and games. With ambient light adaptation, the new format will not treat all environments the same as the previous format. Instead, it will allow adjustments based on room lighting, helping maintain HDR contrast and detail. Speaking of tone mapping, HDR10+ Advanced increases the precision of local dimming and tone dimming to ensure accurate highlights and deeper blacks.

Consider this a major upgrade, HDR10+ Advanced is set to be targeted at premium HDR TVs and monitors, but as far as implementation is concerned, it’s still a while before we see it become a mainstream standard. Samsung says it will start rolling out HDR10+ Advanced across its range of high-end TVs in 2026, and the first reported major streaming platform is Amazon Prime Video. Others haven’t, and it may take a while as platforms like Netflix and Disney took several years to support HDR10+.
